Wonju Short-Term Rental Guide: Rooftop Room & Private House in Gangwon-do, South Korea

If you’re heading to Wonju, Gangwon-doand need a place to stay for a short while, I have a space I’d love to recommend. It’s actually the rooftop room where I’ve personally stayed while going back and forth between Seoul and Wonju, right by the back gate of Sangji University.

There are two short-term rental options in total:

1. a rooftop room (for 1–4 guests)

2. and a detached house (for 1–6 guests).

Now that winter is almost over, this rooftop room is about to shine even more.

Let me start with the rooftop space first.

It’s a short-term rental where you can finally
experience that rooftop-room fantasy in real life, without a huge commitment.

This is what it looks like right now. Clean and tidy, right? 🙂

The rooftop room is on the 5th floor of the building.

Until recently, it was a lived-in home,but since I’ll likely be traveling more often within Korea and overseas, and I’m not always in Wonju, I’ve decided to list it on the 33m2 appas a weekly short-term rentaland start renting out the space that way.

If you’ve ever wanted to try living in a rooftop room, this is a great fit. Think of it as a roomy studio-style spacethat someone actually lived in and cared for.

Entry door lock

Open the metal gate and you’ll see the shoe cabinet and the main sliding door right away.

As you can see, it has a spacious studio layout, and everything is neatly organized. 🙂

There’s also a small desk/dining table and a sofa that I use when I stay here and need to get some work done.

The area near the ceiling-mounted air conditioner is the widest part of this rooftop room, and when I stay here, I use the space like you see in the photo. It feels surprisingly open.

So this is how I’ve set it up for now.

There’s also a wardrobe along the wall.

One side of the storage area still has some of my small belongings,

and you can hang your own clothes on the other side.

A few items I use when I stay here are also still in the room.

For guests booking by the week, I’d say the space works for about 2 to 4 people.

Since there aren’t any high-rise buildings behind Sangji University in Wonju, this Wonju rooftop room really gets to show off its charm. The openness is a big plus.

2. Bathroom and Loft (the hidden space)

Behind the kitchen, you’ll find the bathroom, another sleeping area, and a lofted attic space.

Let me show you the bathroom first.
It’s been thoroughly cleaned, so you should be able to use it comfortably.

And finally, let me take you up to the loft.

Climb the stairs and you’ll find a cozy little space where one person can relax comfortably.

There’s even an outlet right by the head area.
If you love this kind of tucked-away space, you’ll probably find it pretty charming.

As many of you already know, a 33m2 short-term rental is definitely not the same as an Airbnb-style accommodation.

This 33m2 short-term rental operates under government guidelines as a weekly space rental platform, so it’s different from a standard hotel or lodging property.

Since this is also a place where I occasionally stay and work, you may notice a few everyday household items left behind.

In other words, this is not a hotel, but a lived-in short-term rental,so
personal toiletries like toilet paper, shampoo, and toothpaste should be prepared by guestsin advance.

The easiest way to think of it is as “a studio workspace where you can stay for a little while.”

Since I do stay here from time to time, you may also notice a few traces of my daily life in the space.

3. Location

Layout & Size
1 room / 1 bathroom / 1 kitchen / 1 living room
Rooftop unit on a mixed-use residential building / exclusive area: 7 pyeong (23㎡)

Because it has a lofted layout, it feels more spacious than the listed floor area suggests.

Location – 1 minute on foot from the back gate of Sangji University

• 5F rooftop, 61 Sangjidae-gil, Wonju-si, Gangwon State, South Korea / Usan-dong 201-2 (5th floor rooftop)

• Sangji University is just a 1-minute walk from the back gate of campus.

Naturally, since it’s right in the heart of the university area, you’ll have convenience stores, restaurants, cafés, and all the everyday essentials close by.It’s a very practical location.

The building’s first floor is home to Mochine Sikdang, a local favorite among Sangji University students. See the solar panels up on the roof? That’s the space. 🙂

4. Transportation & Parking

Unfortunately, like many buildings in Usan-dong, this one does not have an elevator.

That said, the interior has been decorated with a lot of personality. I painted it in blue and white tones inspired by Santorini in Greece and Essaouira in Morocco. 🙂

Once you come up the stairs, you’ll see the metal entrance door to the rooftop room.

There’s a separate door lock here too, and the passcode will only be shared with the rooftop tenant.

• No elevator (stairs only, as is typical for a rooftop room)

• Nearby free public parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

• Parking lot address: 67-5 Sangjidae-gil

The free shared parking lot is right next to the Laon House studio building. If you enter “Laon House” in your navigation app, it’ll be much easier to find the parking area.

5. Guest Information

• To avoid overlapping bookings, please share your dates first. Once payment is confirmed, I’ll send you the check-in instructions by message.

• Recommended occupancy: up to 2–4 guests

• Absolutely no smoking indoors

• Please handle trash, standard garbage bags, and recycling the same way other studio tenants in the building do, and help keep the room clean.

This is the street by the back gate of Sangji University in Usan-dong 🙂 It’s really pretty.

I especially recommend this place for:

• anyone who needs a 1–2 week stay in Wonju,

• visitors coming for Sangji University, the Korean medicine hospital, teaching appointments, or exam schedules,and anyone who needs a temporary place to stay for those reasons.

• It’s also great for people who want to try the rooftop-room lifestylewithout a big commitment.

• It also works well as a temporary home during a move or remodeling gap.

Through 33m2, weekly contracts are available.
The neighborhood infrastructure around the university is excellent,
and the lofted rooftop layout makes the space feel roomier than you’d expect.
