You know you’re just transferring from the subway to the KTX, but the second you arrive at Seoul Station, you suddenly blank on where to go.

What makes it worse is that every search result seems to explain it differently.

“Go out through Exit 1.”
“Head toward Exit 15.”
“Use the KTX transfer passage.”
That’s what people say, but…

then you end up thinking:

“Okay, but where exactly am I supposed to go?”

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve run through Seoul Station dragging a suitcase, so this time I went back and checked the route myself from start to finish.

And here’s the conclusion first:
the key to a fast
Seoul Station KTX transfer

is
not “go out through Exit 15,”
but “follow the passage toward Exit 15.”

If you don’t know that difference and tap out through the gate, you’ll end up taking the long way around for no reason.

Today I’m breaking down the Seoul Station KTX transfer shortcut I actually use for Line 1, in the clearest, least confusing way possible.

1. Why is transferring at Seoul Station so confusing?

Seoul Station is a massive transit hub where KTX, ITX, Mugunghwa-ho, AREX, Seoul Subway Line 1, Line 4, and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line all come together.

Tens of thousands of people pass through every day, so if you hit the wrong time slot, the concourse can feel like total chaos.

In the past, if you wanted to catch the KTX, you basically had to go all the way up to the main concourse at Seoul Station and then back down again, which meant actually running if your transfer time was tight.

But at some point, Seoul Station added a direct transfer passage connecting the KTX platforms and the subway, and it made the route dramatically easier.

Since it connects especially well to KTX Platform 4, the time difference feels bigger than you’d expect.

2. The fastest Seoul Station KTX transfer from Line 1

If I had to boil it down to the only points that really matter, it’s this:

Don’t tap out through the fare gate first.
Follow the signs toward Exit 15.

If you remember just those two things, you’re basically set.

Where you stand on Line 1 also matters. If possible, move into position before the train reaches Seoul Station.

If you get off in those sections, you’ll be much closer to the transfer passage. If you travel for work often, this makes a huge difference in real life.

Anyway,

this is where a lot of people make the same mistake.

When you get off at Seoul Station on the subway, the gate right in front of you says “Seoul Station (KTX),” so naturally you feel like that must be the right way out.

Don’t tap your card and exit there.

If you go that way, you’ll end up crossing back through the inside of Seoul Station, which takes much longer.

If it’s your first time, this is honestly the easiest trap to fall into.
The correct answer is: head toward Exit 15.

Once you pass the fare gates, you’ll see signs for AREX, KTX, ITX, and Mugunghwa-ho.

From there, just keep following the signs for “Exit 15.”

Take the escalator up, make one turn, then go back down, and the Seoul Station transfer passage connects from there.

The layout is actually simpler than it sounds, but because Seoul Station is so huge, it can feel confusing the first time.

Still, the floor markings and signs are pretty well done,
so once you’ve done it once, it becomes genuinely easy.

3. How much faster is it really?

If you use the old route and go out toward Exit 1, then cut through the main concourse at Seoul Station, it can take around 8 to 10 minutes when it’s crowded.

But if you use this Seoul Station KTX transfer shortcut, it drops to about 3 minutes at a normal walking pace, or even 1 to 2 minutes if you move quickly. You really feel the difference when you arrive right before your KTX departure.

It works the same way when you’re going from KTX to the subway, too.

In the Exit 15 direction, there’s a baggage conveyor belt. If you see the belt, you’re going the right way.

That’s another great thing about this route:

you can use it in reverse too. When you get off the KTX and need to catch Line 1, you can connect directly without going all the way up to the main concourse, which is much easier.

It makes an especially big difference when you have a lot of luggage.

Seoul Station is crowded and the walking distances are long, so just dragging a suitcase through the main hall can wear you out fast.

One more Seoul Station transfer tip! At Seoul Station, KTX platform numbers are often posted close to departure time.

So while you’re moving through the transfer passage, I recommend checking the electronic board in advance for your boarding platform number.

If you’re lucky, you may board right from the connected Platform 4. If not, you’ll just need one more escalator ride.

Honestly, at first I was like, “What does ‘toward Exit 15’ even mean exactly?” But once I actually walked it myself, I immediately understood why frequent business travelers swear by this route.

Seoul Station is one of those places where transfers can be weirdly stressful, but after learning this passage, I feel much more relaxed whenever I’m catching the KTX.

4. The one-line summary of the Seoul Station KTX transfer

“Don’t tap out through the gate. Just follow the signs toward Exit 15.”
