If you’re planning a June trip to Gyeongju, South Korea, I highly recommend the Woljeonggyo Bridge-Gyeongju Wolseong-Cheomseongdae-Gyerim route. This Gyeongju walking course gives you cool waterside scenery and a beautiful history walk at the same time. You can see the lovely river views and night scenery at Woljeonggyo Bridge over the Namcheon Stream, explore Wolseong where the Silla royal palace once stood, visit Cheomseongdae, the oldest astronomical observatory in Asia, and stroll through Gyerim, the forest tied to the founding legend of the Gyeongju Kim clan—all on foot. It worked beautifully as both a family trip and a date course.
1. Woljeonggyo Bridge, the coolest view I found in Gyeongju in June
For the June edition of the Visit Korean Heritage Campaign, I wanted to introduce a water-filled route from the Thousand-Year Spirit Road heritage courses in Gyeongju and Andong—somewhere that feels as refreshing as a trip by the sea, a river, or a lake. After a lot of thought, I chose Woljeonggyo Bridge in Gyeongju.
The first time I saw Woljeonggyo, it didn’t feel like just a bridge. It felt like a work of art. The elegant pavilion-style bridge stretching across the Namcheon Stream, the gently flowing water, and the surrounding scenery all came together to show me a completely different side of Gyeongju.
Why Woljeonggyo Bridge is so special: where water and history meet
Woljeonggyo is believed to date back to the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Unified Silla, and the bridge was reconstructed based on extensive historical research and archaeological excavation.
Watching visitors naturally linger here—taking photos, slowing down, and enjoying a walk—made me realize that Woljeonggyo is more than a historic site. It’s also a space that blends surprisingly well into Gyeongju’s modern cityscape.
As you can see, Gyeongju Woljeonggyo is beautiful both outside and inside.
The riverside setting along the Namcheon is gorgeous during the day, but once the sun goes down and the lights come on, the mood changes completely. Under the soft lighting, the dancheong—traditional Korean painted patterns—glows beautifully, and the reflections ripple across the water. It’s easy to see why this is one of the most famous night-view spots in Gyeongju.
That’s also why so many travelers come back around sunset, hoping to catch Woljeonggyo reflected in the water beneath a red-streaked sky. If you have enough time in Gyeongju, I really recommend seeing Woljeonggyo both in daylight and at night.
2. Location and accessibility: ideal for a walking trip
The Woljeonggyo Bridge I mentioned above sits right in the heart of the Gyeongju Historic Areas. Among the heritage routes designated by the Korea Heritage Service as the “Gyeongju-Andong Thousand-Year Spirit Road,” this is one of the easiest and most rewarding courses to follow. If you use the Gyeongju Gyochon Village map, you can comfortably visit Cheomseongdae, Wolseong, and Gyerim together.
If you look at the Gyeongju Gyochon Village map, you’ll see Wolseong just above Woljeonggyo, with Gyerim and Cheomseongdae continuing farther north.
One of the best things about Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province is that its major heritage sites are clustered close together. You can enjoy a slow walking trip without long drives or constantly moving from place to place.
This June, I actually walked the route from Woljeonggyo to Wolseong, then on to Cheomseongdae and Gyerim, and it never felt tiring or inconvenient.

Of course, it’s smart to bring a parasol, sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the intense sun. The summer sunlight here is no joke, so sunscreen is absolutely essential.
3. The best Thousand-Year Spirit Road course to walk together
Wolseong | Just a short walk from Woljeonggyo Bridge, you’ll arrive at Wolseong, the site of the former Silla royal palace.
Today, the area has wide grassy fields and walking paths, so it’s easy to stroll at your own pace while imagining the scale of the old palace grounds. The recently restored Wolseong moat was especially interesting because it shows how water was used for both defense and landscape design.
By the way, if you’re doing the Visit Korean Heritage course, you can collect certification stamps in your visitor passport—my blog readers probably know this already.
The Wolseong certification stamp is available at the Cheomseongdae Information Center, together with the Cheomseongdae stamp, so don’t forget to bring your visitor passport.
Cheomseongdae | Next up was Cheomseongdae, which always feels like the symbol of Gyeongju.
Known as the oldest astronomical observatory in Asia, it stands at a modest height of about 9 meters, but the 27-layer stone structure and its distinctive shape make it more impressive the closer you look.
Cheomseongdae is especially beautiful at night, when the surrounding lights create an even more magical atmosphere. One highlight you really shouldn’t miss is the “Cheomseongdae Media Art” show, which only runs in the evening under the stars.

Gyerim | The next stop was Gyerim, the forest connected to the birth legend of Kim Alji, the founding ancestor of the Gyeongju Kim clan.
Towering zelkova trees and willows grow thick enough to block out the sky, so even in midsummer it feels relatively cool. Once you start walking through the forest, it’s easy to forget you’re still in the middle of the city.
It’s an easy place for all ages to walk, and since it’s also the closest spot to the river near Woljeonggyo, I’d definitely recommend heading here if the heat gets to you in Gyeongju and taking a shady stroll under the trees.
If you’re collecting stamps in the Visit Korean Heritage visitor passport, the “Gyerim” certification stamp is placed on the stand at the House of Cultural Tourism Interpreters near the entrance to Gyeongju Gyochon Village.
4. My honest take after walking the route
Of everything I liked about this summer section of the Gyeongju-Andong Thousand-Year Spirit Road, following the cool flow of water, the biggest draw for me was how perfectly it suits slow travel.
This area is packed with heritage sites, and while you won’t find flashy attractions or amusement rides, the route flows naturally from the Namcheon Stream and Woljeonggyo Bridge to the Silla royal palace site, the ancient observatory, and finally the sacred forest.
In early summer, especially in June and early July, the breeze off the water makes the walk much more comfortable. And if you love photography, almost every stop feels frame-worthy.
Add the visitor passport stamp tour on top of that, and the whole trip becomes even more fun.
But here’s one thing to watch out for!
Summer sun in Gyeongju is seriously strong. Some parts of the route have very little shade around midday, so I highly recommend packing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water if you’re visiting in summer.
